About
“The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place.”
George Bernard Shaw
I’m Matthias Thym, an independent IT consultant based in Graz, Austria.
I like helping people build technical systems they can actually understand and operate with confidence. For me, good consulting is not about creating dependency. It’s about clear communication, solid documentation, and leaving teams in a stronger position than before.
I care about pragmatic solutions, calm collaboration, and technology choices that remain maintainable over time. Transparency and a shared understanding of expectations are important parts of how I work.
For a more detailed overview of my background, experience, and CV, see matthias.thym.at.
How we can work together
I support clients with practical technical work across infrastructure, delivery, and the web.
What I can help with
- DevOps and platform engineering
- CI/CD pipelines and developer workflows
- Monitoring, observability, and operational visibility
- Automation and tooling
- Containerisation and Kubernetes
- Websites and technical web projects
- General IT consulting for small teams and independent businesses
Technologies I’m particularly familiar with
The exact stack always depends on the situation, but these are some of the technologies and tools I’m particularly familiar with:
- Docker
- Kubernetes
- Helm
- GitOps workflows with Flux and Argo CD
- Nix
- GitLab CI/CD
- Platform Engineering with Backstage
- Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
- Prometheus
- Grafana
If you would like a broader overview of the technologies I have worked with over the years, as well as my professional background, please see my CV at matthias.thym.at.
How we can work together
Depending on the situation, I can help with focused support, implementation, review, troubleshooting, or longer collaboration. I prefer pragmatic, maintainable solutions over unnecessary complexity.
- focused help with a specific technical problem
- implementation of a clearly scoped improvement
- review of an existing setup, workflow, or delivery process
- troubleshooting and stabilisation work
- longer collaboration on a broader system or platform topic
“Simplicity is prerequisite for reliability.”
Edsger W. Dijkstra
In-person workshops and coaching
I offer in-person workshops for small development and software engineering teams, as well as 1-on-1 coaching.
The goal is not just to explain tools, but to build shared understanding, strengthen internal capability, and explore approaches that make sense for your company. This can include getting started with CI/CD and DevOps engineering, alongside other technical topics where structured guidance helps.
I’m available for workshops across Austria and elsewhere in Europe by agreement. Workshops are preferably held in English, though I can also deliver them in German as a native speaker.
